Unipile Guide 2026: LinkedIn & WhatsApp API for Outreach

Unipile turns real LinkedIn and WhatsApp accounts into an API. The practical guide: setup, rate limits, ban risk, GDPR, and when the API beats a ready-made tool.

What Unipile is — and what it isn’t

Unipile is a unified messaging API: it attaches real communication accounts — LinkedIn, WhatsApp, email, and other channels — to your own application as a programmable interface. Sending messages, issuing connection requests, receiving incoming replies via webhook, reading profiles: all through one API, regardless of channel.

The most important point first, because it causes most of the misunderstandings: Unipile is not an outreach tool. There’s no sequence interface, no campaign dashboard, no built-in personalization. Unipile is the infrastructure building block that your own system sits on top of. Anyone looking for a ready-made interface should read the HeyReach guide instead.

We’re writing this guide out of production use: at CegTec, both LinkedIn outreach and WhatsApp outreach run through Unipile-connected accounts, orchestrated by our own AI system.

How the connection works

Unipile doesn’t connect to an official LinkedIn partner API (one doesn’t exist for outreach in this form) but instead authenticates a real account and acts on its behalf:

  1. Connect the account: The LinkedIn/WhatsApp account is connected via a hosted auth flow (for WhatsApp, via QR code just like WhatsApp Web).
  2. Send and read via API: Your own application calls endpoints — send a message, issue a connection request, read conversations.
  3. Replies via webhook: Incoming messages are pushed to your own application, where they can be classified and answered.

This architecture has a direct consequence: the connected account is a real account with a real ban risk. Everything else in this guide revolves around managing that risk.

LinkedIn via Unipile: operating rules from practice

Our cross-workspace baseline for the channel: over 6,600 LinkedIn outbound messages with a 26.2% reply rate and 346 positive responses — LinkedIn is the strongest single conversion channel in our system. But these numbers only hold up if the channel isn’t overdriven:

RuleValue from practice
Connection requests per day and account~20-25, no more
Connection noteUsually none (higher acceptance rate) or one sentence with a real reference
Message after acceptanceReferences a public signal, not the company website
Follow-upsSparing — LinkedIn is a dialogue channel, not a sequence machine
AccountA grown, real profile — never a freshly created account

The real lever sits before the send: signal-based sourcing instead of cold lists. Anyone who tracks posts and comments around defined keywords and only reaches out to people who have just publicly shown interest in the topic has different conversations than someone working from scraped lists. How this works in general is covered in the article on signal-based outbound.

WhatsApp via Unipile: the underrated channel

WhatsApp can be connected via Unipile just as easily as LinkedIn — and for certain target groups it’s clearly stronger than email. Our production numbers: 25.6% reply rate (240 replies out of 939 outbound messages, 71 of them positive), versus roughly 4% on cold email in the same system. The channel converts especially strongly among owners and C-level in solar technology, renewable energy, and agriculture.

Operating rules that have proven effective:

  • A dedicated number per use case, never the private or central business number
  • Ramp up slowly: 10-20 new conversations per day and number
  • First message under 300 characters, no link, offer an opt-out
  • At most 1 follow-up after 3-4 days — WhatsApp doesn’t forgive persistence
  • Every reply goes through human sign-off before it’s answered

The full mechanics, including the mobile-number filter from Google Maps data, are covered in the article on WhatsApp acquisition for local businesses; the legal overview is in WhatsApp in B2B outreach.

The API layer changes nothing about the rules of outreach:

  • Section 7(2) No. 2 UWG requires prior express consent for electronic first contact — presumed consent does not suffice there, it applies only to telephone calls to business market participants (Section 7(2) No. 1 UWG). A substantive connection to the recipient’s business activity lowers the practical risk but does not replace consent.
  • GDPR: Contact data from public sources may be processed with a documented balancing of interests (Art. 6(1)(f)); access and deletion processes must be in place.
  • LinkedIn ToS: Automation violates the terms of use — that’s not a legal violation, but a contractual risk paid for with the account. Conservative limits are therefore not caution but an operating requirement.

Unipile vs. ready-made tools: the honest breakdown

Sequence logicBuild it yourselfBuilt in
PersonalizationYour own system (e.g. LLM pipeline)Template variables
Reply handlingWebhook → your own classificationInbox in the tool

The decision is rarely “better or worse” but architectural: tool for teams, API for systems. At CegTec, Unipile is the channel layer under an AI system that collects signals, qualifies leads, personalizes messages, and answers replies with human sign-off — the API layer makes sense exactly when that orchestration already exists.

Conclusion

Unipile solves an infrastructure problem cleanly: making real LinkedIn and WhatsApp accounts programmable, multichannel through one interface. It deliberately doesn’t solve the outreach problem — relevance, personalization, and reply handling stay the job of the system above it. Anyone who has that system (or wants one) gets the most stable channel foundation with Unipile; anyone who doesn’t will get started faster with a ready-made tool.

Common questions

What is Unipile and what is it used for in outreach?

Unipile is a unified messaging API: it connects real communication accounts — LinkedIn, WhatsApp, email — to your own software through a single interface. In outreach, Unipile is used to process messages, connection requests, and incoming replies programmatically, without running a separate tool with its own interface for every channel. It's an infrastructure building block, not a ready-made outreach tool.

Is LinkedIn automation via Unipile safe from account bans?

No, no provider can guarantee that — the connected account is a real LinkedIn account and is subject to LinkedIn's terms of use. Ban risk is managed through behavior: conservative limits (roughly 20-25 connection requests per day and account), human-like sending patterns, no bulk actions in a short time. Anyone who scales aggressively risks the account, regardless of the technical provider.

What does Unipile cost compared to ready-made outreach tools?

Unipile is billed per connected account (pricing tiers depending on volume and channels, current prices at unipile.com). But the comparison with tools like HeyReach is uneven: Unipile only delivers the API — sequence logic, personalization, reply handling, and reporting have to be built by your own application. Ready-made tools get you started faster; Unipile pays off when you're already orchestrating your own system.

Is WhatsApp outreach via Unipile possible in a GDPR-compliant way?

The technology doesn't decide that — the outreach itself has to. **Section 7(2) No. 2 UWG** requires prior express consent for electronic first contact — presumed consent does not suffice there, it applies only to telephone calls to business market participants (Section 7(2) No. 1 UWG). A substantive connection to the recipient's business activity lowers the practical risk but does not replace consent. In practice that means: business numbers from public sources, a clear business occasion, opt-out in the first message, a dedicated business number, and documented processes. Details in the article on WhatsApp in B2B.

When Unipile, when a ready-made tool like HeyReach?

HeyReach and comparable tools are the right choice when a team wants to run LinkedIn sequences through a ready-made interface. Unipile is the right choice when your own system — say, an AI orchestration — is meant to control the channels and LinkedIn/WhatsApp are just output and input channels. Short version: tool for teams, API for systems.
