ChatGPT Ads in DACH: is the channel worth it?

ChatGPT Ads have been bookable in DACH since 09/2026. How targeting and billing work, who the channel suits — and who it does not.

The channel is newly bookable — the more interesting question is for whom

OpenAI opened self-service access for European advertisers on 1 September 2026. The Ads Manager is listed as available for Germany, Austria and Switzerland, after the European rollout ran across 31 countries from 24 August 2026. Booking runs via ads.openai.com or through the OpenAI Ads Solutions Team and agency partners. Sponsored placements were first tested in ChatGPT in February 2026; the self-serve beta opened on 5/6 May 2026 for US advertisers.

All figures: as of 09/2026. The platform is changing fast.

So the question is no longer whether you can advertise inside ChatGPT, but whether it pays off for your business. And that is exactly where it gets uncomfortable for B2B.

The one restriction that decides everything

Ads are served only to users on the Free and Go tiers. Anyone subscribed to Plus, Pro or Team sees no advertising.

That is not a technical detail; it is the definition of your reachable audience. A large share of the decision-makers who release budgets in upper mid-market B2B work on a paid tier, frequently on a company-provided Team licence. You will not reach those people here, no matter how good your ad is.

This produces a clear split:

ChatGPT Ads are strong forChatGPT Ads are weak for
high volume, broad purchase intentnarrow enterprise ABM lists
SMB and self-employed demanda few named target accounts
consumer-adjacent and prosumer offersbuyers almost certain to be on a paid tier
self-serve products with a short buying pathlong committee decisions

If you run ABM against twenty corporates, you can skip this channel. If you want to capture demand from smaller businesses, trades or the self-employed, you have a new and still lightly contested surface here.

You are not buying keywords, you are describing a conversation

Targeting is contextual only: delivery follows the topic and intent of the ongoing conversation, plus prior chat history and previous ad interactions. No profile targeting, no cookies, no classic behavioural targeting, no keyword buying as in Google Ads.

Steering happens through a context hint of at most 280 characters at ad group level: a plain-language description of the conversations your ad should be eligible for. In craft terms that sits closer to writing an ICP description than to building a keyword list — and it is therefore a genuinely new skill your team has to build.

The account structure has three levels: campaign (objective and budget) → ad group (bid and context hint) → ad (title, copy, image, landing page). The ad itself renders below the ChatGPT answer, clearly labelled as sponsored and visually separated from the response.

Billing, creative, review

  • Billing: the Reach objective runs on CPM (per 1,000 impressions), the Clicks objective on CPC (per valid click). No minimum spend. OpenAI recommends starting with a max bid of around $3 to $5 per click.
  • Creative: text-led, not visual. OpenAI recommends a title of 16 to 24 characters and copy of 32 to 48 characters, accepting up to 50 and 100 respectively, plus one square image up to 1200 × 1200 px. Third-party blogs quote conflicting limits (for example 50 to 80 characters for the headline, 150 to 200 for the description) — what binds is OpenAI’s own published values and the input mask in the Ads Manager.
  • Setup requirements: email, business details, tax ID, billing method, landing page.
  • Review: manual, and most campaigns clear within 24 hours if creative and landing page comply with the ad policies.
  • Reporting: attribution reports run on a 24 to 48 hour delay. Same-day dashboards mislead.

On market scale: ChatGPT Ads reportedly reached a $1B annualised revenue run rate within around 200 days of launch. That describes demand for ad inventory, not the performance you should expect.

What this means for your plan

Test it if your demand is broad, your buyers plausibly sit on Free or Go, your landing page carries the sale without a call, and you can measure independently of the ads report. Entry is cheap: no minimum spend, setup in an afternoon.

Skip it if your target picture is a named account list, your buyers work in corporate environments on Team licences, or your buying path runs through committees over several months. Put the same money into channels that reach those people.

And regardless of the ad decision, the organic question remains: whether ChatGPT names you in the answer itself. Paid placements sit beside the answer, not inside it. How to become visible there is covered in improving ChatGPT visibility and in the AI search visibility guide.

One disclosure up front: we have measured no results of our own on this channel. Anyone quoting you DACH benchmarks for ChatGPT Ads in September 2026 cannot substantiate them.

Common questions

Since when can you book ChatGPT Ads in DACH?

OpenAI opened self-service access for European advertisers on 1 September 2026; the Ads Manager is listed as available for Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The European rollout across 31 countries ran from 24 August 2026. Booking runs via ads.openai.com or through the OpenAI Ads Solutions Team and agency partners. As of 09/2026.

Who actually sees ChatGPT Ads?

Only users on the Free and Go tiers. Anyone subscribed to Plus, Pro or Team is not served ads at all. For B2B this is the decisive filter: a large share of the decision-makers who release budgets in mid-market and enterprise settings work on paid tiers and cannot be reached through this channel. As of 09/2026.

How does targeting work for ChatGPT Ads?

Contextually only: delivery is based on the topic and intent of the ongoing conversation, plus prior chat history and previous ad interactions. There is no profile or cookie targeting and no keyword buying in the Google Ads sense. Steering happens through a context hint of at most 280 characters at ad group level.

What do ChatGPT Ads cost?

There are two objectives with two buying models: Reach is billed on CPM (per 1,000 impressions), Clicks on CPC (per valid click). There is no minimum spend. OpenAI recommends starting with a max bid of roughly $3 to $5 per click. Reliable CPC benchmarks specifically for DACH are not available as of 09/2026.

How long does campaign review take?

Campaigns are reviewed manually. Most clear within 24 hours, provided the creative and the landing page comply with OpenAI's ad policies. Plan that buffer in rather than scheduling a launch to the hour.

Why does the dashboard show too little on day one?

Attribution reports run on a 24 to 48 hour delay, so same-day readings systematically mislead. Evaluate in windows of at least one week and measure additionally on your own side through UTM parameters, landing page goals and CRM handover.
